Software Requirements - University Owned Computers

University-owned computers running a supported operating system must be properly configured to be connected to the campus network. This also requires that a minimal set of software is installed on the workstation.

If you have a university-owned workstation, laptop, or tablet still running Windows 7 please contact the Help Desk with your asset tag number to schedule your upgrade to Windows 10! (608) 342-1400 or helpdesk@uwplatt.edu.

Windows 11 Professional/Enterprise

  • Roll out of Windows 11 on a wider scale will be ongoing through October 2025.
  • Windows 11 (Minimum version 21H2, recommended version 23H2) see Microsoft Support - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/13853/windows-lifecycle-fact-sheet
  • Run Windows Update and install all critical updates. (Automatic Updates must be set to ON)
  • Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection
  • Microsoft SCCM Configuration Manager
  • Microsoft File and Print Sharing must be removed/disabled

Windows 10 Professional/Enterprise

  • Windows 10 (Minimum version 22H2, recommended version 22H2) see Microsoft Support - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/13853/windows-lifecycle-fact-sheet
  • Windows 10 reaches end of life in October of 2025. All university devices must be updated to Windows 11 before this time.
  • Run Windows Update and install all critical updates. (Automatic Updates must be set to ON)
  • Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection
  • Microsoft SCCM Configuration Manager
  • Microsoft File and Print Sharing must be removed/disabled

ITS Still provides limited support as needed. Some existing instrumentation/hardware requires Windows 7. These workstations will be supported. If you have a workstation that still has Windows 7 which doesn't have these requirements, please notify the Help Desk immediately.

Windows XP Professional **No Longer Supported by Microsoft** see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/end-support-help

Mac OS

Apple is still releasing updates and patches for the following OS versions:

  • Mac OS 13 (13.2.1) - Ventura
  • Mac OS 12 (12.6.3) - Monterey
  • Mac OS 11 (11.7.4) - Big Sur
