Office 365 (Outlook 2013) - View and subscribe to Internet Calendars

Internet Calendars are calendars that are shared through the Internet. These calendars are based upon a global Internet standard that allows calendar information to be exchanged between people regardless of the application that is used to create or view the information. Internet Calendars use the iCal format and the .ics file name extension.

There are two types of Internet Calendars --- static and dynamic.

Open a static calendar (ics)

A static calendar is sent to you in an e-mail message in the ics format. It is a static calendar that can be updated only after the calendar owner sends you a new version.

  1. After receiving a message which includes a link to an external calendar (url which end in .ics extension), click on the link.
  2. When prompted, click Open to import the calendar into Outlook.

The calendar opens in side-by-side view in the Outlook Calendar. It's also added to the Navigation Pane (Navigation Pane: The column on the left side of the Outlook window that includes buttons for the Mail, Calendar, and Tasks views and the folders within each view. Click a folder to show the items in the folder.) in Calendar view, under Other Calendars.

Note   The imported calendar is a static view. To update it, you need to subscribe to it or repeat this procedure to import a copy of the most current version.

Subscribe to a dynamic calendar (iCal)

To keep the imported calendar up-to-date, subscribe to the calendar in Outlook.

Note: Make sure you have a copy of the url of the internet calendar you want to subscribe to before continuing.

  1. In Outlook, click File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
  2. On the Internet Calendars tab, click New.

When you start Outlook, it checks the internet calendar for updates and downloads any changes. If you keep Outlook open, it also periodically checks for and downloads updates depending on how often the other service tells Outlook to check for updates.

Note   Internet calendars cannot be edited. They are read-only.

Remove/Delete a subscription to an Internet Calendar (iCal)

Note: This will not delete any data. It will remove the calendar from your view within Outlook.

  1. In Outlook, click Calendar within navigational menu links.
  2. Right-click on the internet calendar and select Delete Calendar from the sub-menu.
  3. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
